Why Are Eggs the Best Friend of the Lunchbox?
And here we go again: 180 school days, 180 lunches to prepare (double or triple that depending on how many kids you have at home)! Every evening, we have to think about what to cook for the next day’s lunch… Okay, enough complaining — we have an ally to introduce you to: our dear friend the egg.
You’ve probably already met this incredible protein, but with back-to-school season approaching, we thought we’d refresh your memory by sharing five reasons why the egg is the lunchbox’s best friend.
1. When cooked, its shell is super strong
Eggs are fragile — that’s a fact. We’ve all tested their limits coming back from the grocery store, which probably ended in an omelet at the bottom of a reusable bag. That said, once cooked, it’s a whole different story. A hard-boiled egg is the best option when transportation is involved. Good to know: once boiled, an egg in its shell keeps for up to 7 days in the refrigerator!
2. Its nutritional value speaks for itself
Eggs are known for their exceptional nutritional profile. Statistically, the protein efficiency ratio of an egg is 93.7%, which is well above the passing grade! When it comes to nutrition, it’s at the top of its class. As for its composition, we can say that eggs contain “good fats,” meaning unsaturated fats. With no trans fat and only 1.6 g of saturated fat, it’s definitely a very healthy choice.
3. You can trace your egg almost back to the hen
Who doesn’t like knowing where their food comes from? The Fédération des producteurs d'oeufs du Québec heard us. Thanks to three distinct elements found on the packaging, we can now trace the origin of the dozen eggs sitting in our fridge. How does it work? Just locate the identification code for the province, producer, and henhouse (for example QC5C2), then type it into the search bar right here.
4. It’s an extremely economical protein
Let’s be honest — groceries are expensive enough as it is. So when we can save by choosing low-cost foods, we’re all for it! You’ll be happy to learn that a “large” egg costs no more than $0.25 to $0.30. Without a doubt, eggs are the most affordable animal protein on the market. Use them in sandwiches, salads, and egg-based recipes!
5. It goes well with everything (or almost everything)!
Last but not least, eggs are the base of almost everything. Whether for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, eggs are an essential ingredient in many recipes. Beyond that, they can be enjoyed in many forms. On their own or paired with something else, they’re the perfect companion for any craving!
In short, we all need eggs in our lives — especially in our lunchboxes.
