Local foods in the spotlight at Colabor

Portrait and Story Featured Institution

In schools, child care centres, hospitals and seniors’ residences across Quebec, every meal is an opportunity to make a difference. Integrating more local foods into menus is about much more than culinary choices—it’s a concrete action that supports local families, strengthens communities and reduces the environmental footprint of every plate. For food distributor Colabor, every institution has the power to be part of this collective story.

Colabor’s role: connecting local stories

Colabor’s role is to be the essential link between local producers and the tables of schools, hospitals, child care centres and seniors’ residences. In collaboration with Aliments du Québec and Maturin, the company makes the transition to local food simple, efficient and accessible.

A story behind every meal

In a seniors’ residence in Quebec, a chef chose to add local cherries to homemade desserts. The choice fell on Uni-Fruits cherries, carefully grown in orchards across the province.

The result? Residents rediscover the authentic taste of local fruit, and a family business gains a strong partner to support its growth season after season.

This type of initiative is more than an anecdote—it’s proof that every institution can contribute to a collective movement, one meal at a time. Thanks to the partnership between Maturin and Colabor, these initiatives become simple, sustainable and accessible, bringing local producers closer to the tables of Quebec institutions.

A collaboration for greater impact

The annual event Les institutions mangent local! is an initiative of Aliments du Québec as part of its Aliments du Québec au menu program. Its 8th edition will take place from September 22 to 28, 2025. Open to all Quebec institutions, the movement invites participants to discover, cook and enjoy local foods.

Colabor, a proud partner of the event, shares the same goal: bringing local products closer to institutional tables. By already supplying many schools, child care centres, hospitals and seniors’ residences with local foods, Colabor helps facilitate the shift toward sustainable local food and turns every meal into an opportunity to showcase local producers.

The success of this approach relies on producers and processors who put their expertise at the service of quality, and on institutions that choose to integrate more Quebec foods into their menus. Colabor makes this connection possible on a large scale by simplifying access and ensuring stable supply.
