Mejicano: A Taste of Mexico with a Truly Quebec Heart

Portrait and Story Featured Company

Meeting Mejicano’s owners, Philippe and Pascal Gadoua, is to dive into the inspiring story of a company that has grown and adapted to market demand while staying true to its values.

For Pascal and Philippe Gadoua, baking is a family story

Pascal and Philippe are the fourth generation of bakers in the Gadoua family. Over the years, they’ve had the opportunity to work in every area of the bakery business and to understand each step of production and commercialization. It was only natural to apply the expertise they’ve built over time to the tortilla category.

Their complementary roles—Pascal in operations and Philippe in sales and marketing—have also greatly contributed to Mejicano’s success.

It all began in Montréal

Mejicano was founded in 1995 on Chabot Street in Montréal. Philippe recalls the company’s modest beginnings and emphasizes how commitment and passion have been essential to Mejicano’s journey. “We started small, but with big ambition,” he says.

In 2005, the company reached an important milestone by moving to a larger facility in Anjou. This strategic decision allowed Mejicano to increase production capacity and meet growing demand.

The year 2014 marked a major turning point with Philippe and Pascal Gadoua taking the reins. The brothers brought new energy to Mejicano, added a new production line, and continued expanding the business.

In 2018 and 2022, Mejicano kept building momentum by adding production lines and opening a second facility in St-Hubert, equipped with state-of-the-art technology. “We always want to stay ahead of the curve and offer the best products to our customers. We listen to consumers and give them what they want—more than that: we make delicious products people genuinely love. We wouldn’t bring a product to market if we didn’t think it was excellent,” Pascal explains enthusiastically.

A product range that keeps growing

The company knows how to meet the expectations of even the most demanding consumers, offering around thirty different products in about fifteen exquisite flavors, available in multiple formats suited to every occasion.

From the 4.5-inch street taco tortilla—perfect for a quick, tasty bite—to 7- and 10-inch tortillas ideal for satisfying meals, all the way to the 12-inch burrito size for heartier appetites, Mejicano has thought of everything.

But innovation and adaptability are part of the company’s DNA. Aware of evolving food trends and habits, Mejicano works tirelessly to develop new flavors and types of tortillas with unique attributes—designed to surprise and delight its customers.

Production capacity and operational excellence at Mejicano

Mejicano’s drive is also reflected in its impressive production capacity. On average, the company produces about 558 tortillas per minute—an astounding 33,460 tortillas per hour. This performance highlights not only the efficiency of Mejicano’s production processes, but also its ability to meet growing demand while maintaining a high level of quality.

Mejicano has positioned itself as a leader in its field—ready to take on future challenges and keep delighting fans of Mexican cuisine.

Product quality matters at Mejicano

Flour, oil, water, and the exclusive dry-ingredient blend are sourced 95% from Quebec. The three essentials for ensuring product quality are ingredient quality, employee expertise, and state-of-the-art equipment. Mejicano products are available online via Maturin, in major grocery chains, and in the food service sector as well.

Ambitious plans for the future

Mejicano’s momentum goes beyond its product assortment. The company has successfully conquered a wide territory, serving Quebec, Ontario, the Maritimes, and Western Canada. “Our presence in these markets is the result of hard work and a passion for quality,” Philippe notes. Mejicano’s future plans are clearly geared toward growth and innovation.

“We want to restart our R&D projects, continue expanding across Canada, and explore export opportunities,” Philippe shares. Adding new categories of Mexican products is also being considered. Currently, Mejicano serves the Canadian market from coast to coast. In the medium and long term, the company aims to begin exporting its products and to keep diversifying its categories.

Mejicano: local excellence and commitment

All Mejicano products are prepared here, by people from here. Without a doubt, the Aliments préparés au Québec logo adds value when selling its products in Quebec. Younger generations are more sensitive to buying local and supporting homegrown businesses. The Aliments préparés au Québec logo is a key element in Mejicano’s recognition in the market.

“For us, it’s a guarantee of quality and proof of our commitment to local production,” Pascal explains. Consumers are increasingly attentive to buying local, and the Aliments du Québec logos reinforce that trend.

To wrap up…

Mejicano is, above all, dedicated and passionate employees, quality products, fast execution, and a company that delivers on what it promises. The Gadoua brothers have built a brand that resonates with consumers, offering an authentic and varied taste experience. The future looks bright, and Mejicano is ready to take on what’s next—always with the same passion that has driven it from the start.

Mejicano’s story is one of Quebec success: a company that has grown and adapted while remaining deeply rooted in its values.
