Do You Know the ancestor of the Halloween Pumpkin?

Good to know

Eggplant? Beet? The big winner is… the turnip! Fun fact: potatoes — and even beets — were also used as alternatives.

And what do turnips have to do with it?

People carved out turnips, placed a candle inside, and set them outside their doors. The glowing turnips helped guide the spirits to their homes. But why a turnip? Because the European climate is very different from Québec’s, making it difficult to grow certain vegetables such as squash. However, root vegetables — like turnips, potatoes, and beets — were plentiful.

Here in Québec, we grow all kinds of squash in abundance, including pumpkins. With the arrival of Irish immigrants, the tradition took root here too, but pumpkins quickly became the preferred option: prettier, larger, and much easier to carve!

Where does this tradition come from?

Before explaining why, let’s go back to the origins of Halloween. Who invented this celebration? Where does it come from? While the Irish and the Scots disagree on who first created the Feast of the Dead, legend says that on the night of October 31, the dead return to visit the living. To welcome them, people would leave food on the table and keep the hearth lit so the spirits could warm up and enjoy a good meal before returning to the land of the dead.
