Yes, you read that right: these little fruity treasures keep showing up in our fields even as the days get shorter. While they may be a bit more discreet than their summer counterparts, don’t be fooled by their modest size—these fruits are bursting with irresistible fall flavor.

Strawberry season

Quebec strawberries available for several months a year—even all year long? Oh yes! That’s thanks to new strawberry varieties that produce fruit continuously… and not to mention greenhouse growing, which can keep this sweet “holy grail” around year-round!

Fall strawberries vs. summer strawberries

Today, fall strawberries represent about half of Quebec’s annual strawberry production. They’ve been around for years, but some Quebecers still don’t know they exist. In the past, we mainly had summer strawberry plants: they flowered in late spring, produced fruit in June and July, and that was it.

Fall-bearing strawberry plants, on the other hand, don’t pay much attention to shorter days. So when autumn arrives—cooler and with fewer hours of daylight—the plant isn’t affected. In fact, it loves the cooler weather and produces bright red, sweet strawberries continuously from August, right after summer strawberry harvests wrap up.

There are several varieties, but the most popular in Quebec is undoubtedly Seascape. It’s known for large fruit, a beautiful vivid red color, and a deliciously sweet taste. That’s why Quebec strawberries are now available from June until the first frosts of October—much to our delight!

Raspberry season

While we often think of raspberries as a summer treat, fall raspberries prove the season doesn’t end so quickly. As trees lose their leaves and temperatures begin to drop, fall-bearing raspberry canes offer one last fruity harvest to enjoy. Generally, harvesting starts at the end of summer and continues until the first frosts in October.

Fall raspberries also have an interesting feature: they offer a second harvest the following spring on the lower part of the same cane—almost like an extra surprise long after their fall appearance.

It’s still time for pick-your-own

So where can you find these fruity gems? The good news is that some farms still offer pick-your-own for those who want the full harvest experience. And for anyone who prefers to enjoy them without stained fingertips, many local markets and grocery stores offer baskets filled with these little treasures.
