5 Unusual Foods to Grill
If there’s one summer tradition that brings Quebecers together around good food, it’s the barbecue. As soon as the warm season arrives, we fire up the grill and enjoy simple, tasty dishes made with local ingredients.
Every grill master has their specialty: juicy burgers, perfectly seared steaks, colorful skewers… But this summer, why not add a little variety to the menu? While keeping the classics, it’s the perfect time to explore new recipes and showcase the richness of Quebec food.
1. Corn
What’s better than enjoying fresh ears of corn with the family? To avoid the big pot of boiling water, try cooking your corn on the barbecue. First, soak the unshucked ears in water for 15 to 30 minutes. Keeping the outer husk on, place them directly on the grill for about 10 minutes. Don’t wander too far—turn them every 2 minutes for even cooking. So, when’s the next corn roast?

2. Cheese
Choosing the right cheese is crucial—otherwise, you might end up with a melted mess on the grill! For perfectly grilled slices, opt for a firm, salty cheese like halloumi. Brush the cheese with a little oil before placing it directly on the grill. Close the lid for 2 to 3 minutes. Once golden, remove from the heat and serve with a drizzle of olive oil and some fresh herbs from the garden. A simple appetizer that’s sure to please!

3. Watermelon
Watermelon? Seriously? At first, it doesn’t seem like a great grilling candidate. Think again! Grilled watermelon can be a delightful surprise. Cut it into thick slices, remove the rind, and brush both sides with canola oil. Place directly on the grill and cook for 5 minutes on each side until nicely caramelized. Serve with a few drops of balsamic vinegar, feta, and red onion. Tempting, isn’t it?

4. Fish and Seafood
Whether it’s trout, sturgeon, shrimp, or even lobster, seafood is a barbecue must-have. To maximize flavor, don’t hesitate to use marinades—oil, garlic, a few herbs, and you’re ready to go!

5. Cake
Of course, we saved the best for last: cake! Cut thick slices of pound cake or angel food cake, then warm them on the grill for a few minutes until hot and lightly toasted. For a perfect dessert, serve with Quebec berries such as strawberries, raspberries, or blueberries—they’ll be in season soon! For those with a sweet tooth, add a drizzle of chocolate sauce.
As you can see, almost anything is possible with a bit of imagination and a barbecue. Now all that’s left is to grab your tongs and apron—it’s time to savor summer!
